Mohammed Obaid Al Tunaiji, Director of the Central Region branch of the Sharjah Department of Agriculture and Livestock, announced the launch of the fourth phase of the initiative to distribute non-genetically modified wheat seeds to farmers and homeowners. The week-long initiative, held at the wheat farm, involved the distribution of 20 tons of organic seeds, a generous gift from His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.
Speaking exclusively to “Sharjah 24,” Al Tunaiji confirmed that this season will see the distribution of 20 tons of non-genetically modified organic seeds, targeting approximately 500 farmers. He explained that the initiative not only distributes seeds to farmers but also includes a separate programme to distribute seeds to homeowners in smaller quantities.
Enhancing production according to UAE's climatic conditions
Al Tunaiji explained that the department adopted a distribution programme this season based on land area, providing quantities of 20, 10, and 5 kilogrammes, in addition to an initiative specifically for homeowners offering smaller quantities of between one and one and a half kilogrammes. The aim is to promote community farming and train farmers in modern agricultural methods and technologies that enhance production in accordance with the UAE's climatic conditions.
Empowering farmers
The Director of the Central Region branch of the Department of Agriculture and Livestock pointed out that the initiative reflects the vision of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah to support and empower farmers and encourage them to expand wheat cultivation. He noted that the demand for this crop is increasing year after year thanks to significant support and ongoing initiatives.
