In a significant move toward enhancing food security and promoting sustainable agricultural practices among local farmers, Sharjah has launched the Organic Farm Support Programme.

The Organic Farm Support Programme is poised to become a pivotal enabler of sustainable agriculture in Sharjah. It seeks to enhance the organic food security system by offering vital support to organic farmers and those aspiring to transition to organic practices. e Programme aligns with the vision of the Ruler of Sharjah, aimed at expanding the emirate's sustainable organic food security system.

Razan Fahad Al Hammadi, Director of Green Development at the Sharjah Agriculture and Livestock Department, welcomed farmers who have obtained organic farming certification and are prepared to transition to organic practices. “This is an encouragement from the department to provide healthy and safe food. We assist farmers in growing food that contributes to food security and self-sufficiency in Sharjah,” she stated.

The support will encompass organic materials, organic fertilisers, and organic traps, along with a guiding manual. A mini workshop will mark the beginning of a series of workshops offered to farmers, introducing them to the department's key initiatives and available guidance support.

In September, during the planting season, organic seeds will be distributed to farmers who meet the necessary conditions for organic farming certification. The primary requirement is to possess an organic certificate, and farmers are encouraged to contact the department to ensure compliance with all other conditions. Farmers expressed their enthusiasm for the programme. Saeed Khalfan Al Mazrouei from Wadi Al Helo shared, “We learned farming from our fathers and grandfathers, and I have achieved self-sufficiency. I have a variety of crops, including eight different types of wheat.

He added, “Organic farming is important; a person certainly wants to eat and wants their children to eat something natural and good. This programme is a great thing to start with, and we encourage it.” Tariq Salem Al Jallaf, from Sharjah who has two certified organic farms in Al Dhaid, believes that organic farming is beneficial for humanity. He has been planting for almost ten years, all of it organic, and it undergoes tests regarding the soil, water, and pesticides.

In the beginning, he planted for his home, but today, after gaining experience and assistance from everyone, he has started selling. His farm today has a variety of vegetables and fruits.

He said, “We hope for the programme's success and that it supports the farmer and their needs and requirements to take this step.” Dr. Khalifa Al Tunaiji, chairman of the Agriculture and Livestock Department, emphasised the commitment of the Ruler of Sharjah to support all initiatives that contribute to the sustainability of a safe and organic agricultural sector.
